TMJ

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, also known as TMD or TMJ is a common source of pain in the head and facial region. Patients with TMJ dysfunction often experience pain in the neck and facial pain with joint clicking or locking and difficulty with opening related to muscle guarding with capsular restriction and disc issues.

TMD is a specialty area of physical therapy. Dr. Teixeira has worked extensively with TMD patients for over 20 years. He has received extensive manual therapy training on the head, neck and temporomandibular joint and specialized training on the Rocabado method.

Patients with TMD often respond well with a combination of "hands on" manual therapy techniques (such as myofascial release, IASTM), coupled with specific exercises, stretches, education on posture/ergonomics as well as possible dry needling or biofeedback to help release trigger points and relax/retrain the muscles of mastication.
