Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, also known as TMD or TMJ is a common source of pain in the head and facial region. Patients with TMJ dysfunction often experience pain in the neck, face, and ear and frequently experience joint clicking or locking related to muscle guarding with disc issues. Unfortunately many patients are not diagnosed correctly as TMJ is often not suspected to be the primary source of the patient’s pain. With a thorough examination of the TMJ and surrounding muscles we are able to confirm the presence of issues in this area.
The key to resolving TMJ dysfunction lies in combining direct manual techniques, specific exercises to restore proper movement, modalities such as ultrasound or laser to decrease pain and muscle guarding and education on posture and ergonomics to address possible contributing factors.
